Visit Kanoni Corfu (Pontikonisi)

The “Kanoni” is located south of the Old Town after Garitsa, in the southernmost part of the beautiful peninsula, which apart from its natural beauty, holds an important historical site, as it is identified with the location of the ancient city of Corfu.

It took its name from the French who settled in the area in 1789 with an artillery. One of the cannons from the artillery is still intact. Beneath this region, you can find the 17th-century Vlacherna Monastery. By the waterfront, visitors have the opportunity to explore Pontikonisi, a small island housing the charming chapel of Pantokrator. Both the ancient city of Corfu, founded in the 8th century BC, and the ancient temple of Artemis are located in the area.

The unique charm of the small Vlacherna monastery lies in its location, situated in the middle of the sea and accessible through a narrow passage leading to a small harbor. Daily, small boats ferry visitors to the nearby island of Pontikonisi, where they can explore the 13th-century Byzantine church dedicated to Pantokrator. Alternatively, visitors can traverse the lagoon of Chalkiopoulos on foot or by bicycle using a slender bridge. The proximity of the airport adds an unexpected element, as planes may suddenly appear, either descending or ascending, just a few meters overhead.

During the sunset, when the gentle, golden hues of the sun color the waters of the lagoon, Vlacheraina, and Pontikonisi, and airplanes ferry constant travelers to Corfu, your time in Kanoni becomes an exceptional experience! If you happen to be fortunate and witness both the sun setting on one side and the full moon rising on the other, you will be captivated by the enchanting beauty of Corfu at its finest!

The coastline of Kanoni has only a few small beaches on its eastern side, while the airport occupies the entire western part. The runway of the airport literally ends at the sea, right next to the Vlacherna Monastery, and the planes taking off and landing seem so close that you can almost touch them. On the southern edge of Kanoni, there are several cafés and restaurants with an aerial view of the airport and the monastery.

The ancient harbor was located almost where the airport stands today.
